The Art of Design 3

Another re-design! I know a fair few people liked Maikido's original design and may possibly reject the change, but I personally think the new one is superior, and here's why:

Mannekid: This Pokemon was a single-stage evolution originally and since I find single evos boring (with the exception of legendaries and uncommon Pokemon) and I had this idea running (or bouncing) in my head for quite a while, here he is. I hope you like him!

Maikido: The original concept was a wooden martial arts training dummy that, as a dummy, didn't move much and taunted enemies into coming close before counterattacking them. The concept remains the same, though for the re-design, Maikido took on elements of a medieval sword-training dummy too! Firstly the art for the original Maikido needed updating and the design needed simplifying - the original was too busy and it took the eyes a few seconds to adjust to what was going on in the image.

I cut down the number of arms for much the same effect and changed the bandages of the original - which seemed like adornments a Pokemon wouldn't have - and turned them into hand-like implements that did the same job the original hands did. I also made them red, which not only hints at martial arts (like Ryu from the Streetfighter series) but also have a waving 'red blanket to anger the bull' taunting suggestion. I also ditched the nose, which looks a little too tengu-ish in favour of a more mannequin-like poker face.

Overall, I think the re-design has more symmetry than the original but keeps the same effect using less business and confusion.

I remember entering a fusion contest with this one :D I like the added pre-evo. For Maikido, I like the new red bandages and the fact that you cut down the number of arms, which in a way was too complicated for Pokemon standards. However, I feel that the old design had a much better, way more dynamic pose, while the new one just looks like an object instead of a living being looking like an object. If that made any sense. Just making the arms look less stiff would help that while still maintaining the training dummy look you want.
