Helpless, body limp, tossed around like a ragdoll in the irresistible swirling current.
Spiralling head over feet, no sound but a bubbling and roaring cacophony filling every sense.
An odd sense of enveloping peace follows the chaos, plunging the world to deep blue.
D bolted upright in his small bed, torso soaking in a sheath of cold sweat. The same dream again for the third night in a row, he thought as he pulled himself to sit at the end of the bed. Shafts of sunlight were breaking through a small gap in the drawn curtains but the room was lit with a dim glow as D turned on the radio; perhaps there'd be something to take his mind off things there. He flicked through the channels absent-mindedly and scraps of broadcasts filtered through D's awareness.

D quickly turned the radio off.
Crap! It was Pokémon Presentation Day already?! If I don't hurry, I'll be late! D thought, as he ran off to the shower. A short time later, he was dressed and dodging video game console wires as he headed out of his bedroom and down the stairs. Mabel and Barnaby were sitting at the small table in the kitchen, Mabel with a plate of toast and Barnaby with his head in the paper. Their Magmutt, Charcoal, was alternating looks between the table and Barnaby's plate expectantly, its tail thudding against the floor. Barnaby threw a piece of toast crust absently to Charcoal, who snatched it quickly out of the air. They both looked up as D came down the stairs, and Charcoal dashed to meet him.
"You want breakfast, kiddo?" Barnaby said his gruff but amiable voice, motioning to the kitchen table."
"Of course he does Barny, he's got a big day ahead of him, haven't you dear?" Mabel said, going to the toaster. D was very grateful to both of them; they were the ones who had found him on the verge of death on the nearby beach, nursed him back to health with their unconditional kindness. D owed them his life and though he couldn't remember anything prior to regaining conscious in their spare bedroom he considered them family. He fussed Charcoal and kissed Mable on the cheek as he reached for his coat.
"Thanks for the offer, but I have to run or I'll be late for Pokemon Presentation Day. I still feel a bit silly. Most trainers get their first Pokemon way before my age, but I'm gonna meet Brett there."
"Well, don't overdo it, Kiddo," Barnaby said, getting up and slapping D on the back. "I know you want to get better as quick as you can, but you can't rush nature. She's got her own schedule."
"I know, you're right. Thanks, Barny" D said, shaking the old man's hand. "See you both later. 'Bye, Charcoal!" he said, crouching over to pet the Magmutt's head. D stepped out the front door, returning Mabel and Barnaby's waves as he left to meet Brett and retrieve his first (?) Pokemon.
